Chamber Ribbon Cutting

OWENSBORO, Ky. (12/03/13) – Suicide not only takes one life, it takes many. It takes the life of all those involved — family members, friends, and even acquaintances. It affects the lives of so many, yet many people don’t talk about it.

The Owensboro Regional Suicide Prevention Coalition’s mission is to work with neighbors in the community to prevent the tragedy of suicide and its aftermath. The coalition started out as a small task force led by Bob Robey in 2004; they were dedicated to providing help and support for the “survivors” or those affected after the death of a family member or friend due to suicide.

In 2007, the task force became the coalition; they appointed a board of directors, elected officers, and achieved private nonprofit status. On Tuesday, ORSPC became part of the Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce during a ribbon cutting ceremony at their Logsdon Community Center office.

President of ORSPC, Mike Flaherty, explained that there are approximately 30,000 people that die each year in the United States by suicide, and a growing number of them are in the 34 to 55 year-old, working male category.

He encouraged chamber members to build their knowledge of suicide, because of the age and gender range, and to reach out to the community as well.

Flaherty said that 10 to 20 people are affected by the death of any suicide, which means that the death can affect anyone.

ORSPC will host its 10th annual Suicide Prevention Conference, giving the community information and training individuals on prevention and aftermath. In September, they will also host their 7th annual Walk to Reduce Stigma, to encourage people to reach out to the community about a devastating matter.
